Task Overview
The following is a proposed lesson plan and may be changed or not followed.
Lesson One
-
Give the students a brief overview of the assignment and clarify what is expected of them for the task. Attached below is the student task overview sheet.
- Present a talk on what each classification means. Clarify the major aspects of each classification so the students can easily identify what animal belongs to the classification group based on these aspects.

Organise the students into groups. The recommended size for the groups is four. Be sure students are grouped according to their strengths and weaknesses.

Organise transport for you and your students to get to and from the zoo.

Lesson Two
-
Make sure all of your students make it to the transport and travel with them to the zoo.

Check that the students are in their allocated groups from lesson one.

Explain that each student will be taking a suitable amount of photos. The amount of photos will be selected by you.

Monitor your students progress throughout the day and make sure they remain focused on the task.

Take your own pictures for an activity that will take place in lesson seven.

Make sure all of your students make it to the transport and travel with them back to school.
Lesson Three

Give a brief explanation on how to upload photos to the computer. Mention that you will supply the students with help to upload their photos if required.

Help the students to upload their photos, taken at the Zoo to a computer.

Get the students to select an adequate amount of photos for classification from their Zoo pictures.
Lesson Four

Give a brief explanation on how to download the required task sheet and insert their photos onto the task sheet. Attached below is the task sheet for the students.

Get the students to download the task sheet from the task download page on their student website.

Have the students insert their selected pictures onto the first part of the task sheet (Invertebrates and Vertebrates) into the appropriate classification groups.

Lesson Five
-
Get the students to complete the second part of the task sheet, (Mammals, Amphibions, Birds and Reptiles) where they will do a further break down of classification.
- If there is time get the students to start the third part of the task sheet, (Herbivore, Carnivore and Omnivore) where they will do a final breakdown of classification.
Lesson Six
- Get the students to finish the third part of the task sheet, (Herbivore, Carnivore and Omnivore) where they will do a final breakdown of classification.
- Talk to each group individually and get them to allocate themselves one question each from the reflection sheet. Make sure you know which student is doing what question.
- Get the students to complete their question on the reflection work sheet.
- Give a brief explanation on how to email and give the students your email address so they can email you their completed reflection and task sheets.
- Get the students to email you their completed reflection and task sheets. A sugestion is to tell the students you will pass their emails onto the zoo to make this task more realistic for them.
Lesson Seven
- Allow catch up time during the lesson.
- Show the students your photos and get the students to vote on where they believe your animals belong in the classification group and discuss why they believe the animal belongs to that classafication. This can be done using an electronic whiteboard by dragging the images into their appropriate classification.
- At the end mention to the class that they can go and see the other groups work by clicking on the tab on the student website. This will allow the students to see the classification of animals that are different to their animals and see other students thoughts on classification.
In Your Own Time

Upload all of the students work onto a tab on the student website so the students can look at what their classmates have done.

Write letters back from the zoo to the students thanking them for their help in remodelling the zoo or contact your local zoo and see if they will write a reply letter to your students.
